The Vision Splendid Outback Film Festival Program Has Dropped

Hollywood in the Outback returns!

Winton comes alive! Once again the Queensland town plays host to the Vision Splendid Outback Film Festival, which kicks off on June 23. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Women in Film”, and appropriately enough, that means a wealth of incredible female-led and created Australian cinema will be on offer.

“We’ve specifically identified films that pass the Bechdel Test,” explained Creative Director, Dr. Greg Dolgopolov. “During the festival we don’t just screen films, we plan films, we talk about films, we find a common language and work together. In addition to this year’s programming, the festival will host a number of world premiers and Queensland premiers for films that deserve an audience as special as that found in Australia’s Outback Hollywood.”

Among the films on offer this year are the femme-focused likes of Bad Girl, Hotel Coolgardie, Berlin Syndrome, Don’t Tell, and Dance Academy, while one of Australia’s favourite female film talents, Nicole Kidman, will be represented in the form of a special retrospective screening of the beloved ’80s kids classic, BMX Bandits.

Spilling the banks of the stated theme, other films on offer this year include the 4WD adventure, Rough Stuff, the kids adventure, My Pet Dinosaur, the outback horror Killing Ground, the acclaimed Lion, and Kriv Stenders’ Right Here: The Go-Betweens, a look at the hugely influential Brisbane band.

This year’s opening night film is the warm and affecting David Stratton: A Cinematic Life. Meanwhile, Stratton’s longtime partner in film criticism, Margaret Pomeranz, will be present as a guest of the festival, joining Sally Aitkin, Edwina Exton, Alicia Banit, Trish Lake, Megan Riakos, Sara West, Maya Stange, and many more.

The Vision Splendid Outback Film Festival runs from June 23 – July 2, 2017. For info and tickets, shoot over to the official site.
