Want to work on a server farm in Hobbiton?

Weta Digital is among the Wellington-based companies in a  new recruitment initiative, LookSee Wellington, designed to bring top overseas IT talent to the New Zealand city.

The program will see 100 IT professionals picked to travel to Wellington, flights and accommodation paid for, for a series of pre-arranged job interviews with companies who have employment needs relevant to their skills.

This is in response to an IT skills shortage in the city. The program is a spearheaded by Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency (WREDA) and Workhere New Zealand, with support from and is supported by the New Zealand Immigration Service and NZTech.

With Wellignton’s tech industry including the likes of Weta, online accountancy giant Xero, IT system builders Datacom, and virtual reality pioneers 8i, plus somewhere in the region of 900 start-up companies, it’s certainly a bountiful opportunity.

Wellington mayor, Justin Lester, said, “LookSee Wellington is about giving people who might be open to moving to this side of the world a chance to come and have a ‘look-see’ before deciding to relocate, and without having to pay to get here to inform their decision-making.

“It’s also designed to make it easy for them to meet multiple employers – to make the best use of their time – and to get the chance to see and experience what else Wellington has to offer.”

IT pros have until 20 March to register and apply for Looksee Wellington, with the 100 candidates selected traveling to Wellington from 8 – 11 May. For more information, hit up the official site.
