Production has begun in London on the big screen adaptation of Victor Headley’s cult novel Yardie, with acclaimed actor Idris Elba stepping behind the camera to make his feature directing debut.
The film follows D ( Aml Ameen), a young Jamaican man, who sets of a gang war in early ’80s London when he unexpectedly finds the man who murdered his brother back in Jamaica a decade ago. Elba and Stephen Graham (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, This Is England) co-star, along with emerging Jamaican talents Shantol Jackson, Sheldon Shepherd, and Everaldo Creary.
“I am interested in making human stories with characters that are either full of grace or flawed,” Elba noted.”In Yardie the audience will see a film that hopefully means something to the people. I’m honoured to be able to shoot it in my home town of London and as a guest in Jamaica.”
